Abstract:

This session places images generated with AI technologies in conversation with histories of Afro-futuristic storytelling, reflecting on traditions of computer art and digital art within the African context. Dilman Dila, a Ugandan filmmaker, and Tong Wu, a creative technologist, show us how they use generative image technologies for creating culturally-situated characters for Dilman’s forthcoming film. This demo will be followed by a conversation between artists and art curators to discuss the possibilities and limitations of technology to be used for democratizing art, and telling progressive stories rooted in Afro-futuristic traditions.
