Diverse in AI: How CVPR 2024 Celebrates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

As sponsors of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR), the IEEE Computer Society (CS) and Computer Vision Foundation (CVF) have a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and conference leadership shares that vision and has dedicated resources to ensuring widespread representation and an equitable, inclusive, and welcoming environment across the global computer vision and pattern recognition community.

To that end, CVPR 2024, taking place 17-21 June at the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, Wash., U.S.A., through a highly engaged DEI Committee, has provided financial support with the goal of encouraging more diverse participation. This year, the IEEE CS Technical Community on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TCPAMI) and CVF awarded nearly US$200,000 in travel grants to applicants from around the globe who might not have otherwise been able to attend the conference. In addition, the committee offered waived registrations to 537 individuals who applied and qualified for aid to ensure that socioeconomic challenges did not hinder participation.

In addition to financially supporting DEI efforts, the conference also serves as a home for community-based DEI initiatives. This year, CVPR will host several workshops, activities, and social gatherings aimed at fostering and driving impact towards DEI goals, including:

  • Diversity and Inclusion for Everyone Social (19 June, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. PDT) – This social networking event will offer interactive discussions, mentorship, and networking. Participants will learn from each other and work together to understand the challenges and find ways to address what’s needed to advance DEI within the computer vision community.
  • Challenges/Opportunities for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in Fast-Paced AI Social (19 June, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. PDT) – This social will include speakers and panel sessions, roundtable discussions and more. Specifically, it will delve into the unique issues ECRs face, and discuss strategies for balancing research commitments with staying updated on new AI methods; managing time and prioritizing tasks effectively; building a supportive network and seeking mentorship; and more.

Individual DEI-focused groups will also be offering targeted activities. For instance, Women in Computer Vision (WiCV) will host the Women in Computer Vision (WiCV) Workshop (18 June, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. PDT, plus evening mentoring dinner). This workshop will feature female-led keynotes; oral papers; panel discussions; and poster sessions; as well as a mentoring session and dinner. All are welcome to attend.

As Asra Aslam, Ph. D., Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, U.K., and General Chair, WiCV, shares, “Diversity, equity, and inclusion are crucial for everyone nowadays. Concerted DEI efforts accelerate the impact in academics and industry and allow us to grow together. Through the DEI events at CVPR 2024, we hope to bring together LatinX, WiCV, AI4ALL, Black in AI, ECRs, and other interested communities to discuss the key challenges and opportunities within our computer vision community. By bringing all together, we can help bring about meaningful change towards our goal of a more equitable and supportive environment for all.”

DEI events are open to all CVPR 2024 attendees. For more information about DEI efforts at CVPR 2024, contact cvpr2024_dei@googlegroups.com.
